| Spanish abstract | En el artículo se describen las variedades básicas de las representaciones del bastón ceremonial de los mayas del Clásico, se indican sus historias formales y se señalan sus potencialidades iconográficas. El significado de los gestos usados para sostener el bastón ceremonial es rastreado desde el Preclásico medio entre los olmecas. Con esta genealogía, las diferencias regionales durante el Clásico, así como con algunas reflexiones iconográficas, el bastón ceremonial aparece como una representación alegórica, en la que varios “mitos de origen” fueron reinterpretados para explicar, y racionalizar, el poder y la acción reales |
| English abstract | The basic varieties of the Classic Maya ceremonial bar are described; its formal histories outlined; and its iconographic potentials are delimited. The significant gestures used to hold the bar are traced, along with the bar, to the Middle Preclassic Olmec culture. With this genealogy, with regional differences in Classic representations, and in certain iconographic reflections, the Classic cermonial bar is shown to represent a kind of allegory through which various “origin stories” were anciently told and interpreted to explain, thus to rationalize, royal power and action |
