| Spanish abstract | En este artículo se intenta una aproximación crítica al álbum o libro ilustrado para niños a partir de lo que implica para el lector la relación entre texto escrito e imagen. Se parte de las teorías de la recepción, en particular las de Wolfgang Iser y Louise Rosenblatt, para proponer que en la ‘‘brecha’’ o ‘‘espacio’’ entre la palabra y la imagen es donde se construyen los significados del texto. En primer lugar se hace un análisis de estos dos aspectos fundamentales en un libro reciente de Anthony Browne, The Shape Game. En este libro álbum, el reconocido autor e ilustrador juega con las posibilidades de interacción, no solamente entre texto e ilustración, sino también entre distintos tipos de texto y de imagen que invitan al ‘‘lector implícito’’ a participar de manera activa en la creación de una compleja red de significados. En segundo lugar se hace un acercamiento a los lectores ‘‘reales’’ sustentado en una investigación sobre la comprensión de álbumes infantiles en la escuela primaria, en el que se revelaron los procesos a través de los cuales se llenaba el espacio entre palabras e imágenes. El análisis mostró cómo los lectores evaluaban los significados derivados de los dos sistemas simbólicos y se aproximaban a los aspectos literarios posmodernos —como el uso de intra e intertextualidad, la ironía y la fragmentación— que aparecen en álbumes ilustrados contemporáneos. Las conclusiones indican que tanto el análisis del lector implícito como de la respuestas de los lectores reales contribuyen a un mejor conocimiento crítico de este género de la literatura infantil |
| English abstract | This article attempts a critical approach to picturebooks through looking at what the word-picture relationship implies for readers. The ‘‘gap’’ between words and images, where meanings are made, is examined using the work of reader-response theorists, in particular Wolfgang Iser and Louise Rosenblatt. In the first half of this article, this gap is examined in a recent picturebook by Anthony Browne, The Shape Game. In this book, the renowned artist plays with the possibilities of interaction, not only between text and illustration but also between different types of images and text which invite the ‘‘implied reader’’ to actively participate in the creation of a complex web of meanings. In the second part, the response of ‘‘real readers’’ is investigated based on a research project on visual literacy using picturebooks in primary schools. By analyzing the reader’s responses, it became possible to see the processes through which the children ‘‘filled in’’ the ‘‘gaps’’ between words and images. The analysis showed how readers evaluated the meanings derived from both symbolic systems and how they approached postmodern literary aspects that appear in contemporary picturebooks, such as the use of intera- and intertextuality, irony and fragmentation. The conclusions indicate that an analysis of both the ‘‘implied reader’’ and the responses of ‘‘real’’ readers can contribute to a better critical understanding of this genre of children’s literature |
