| English abstract | This study analyzes the morphological structure of verbal bases and nominalizing suffi xes of Portuguese, Spanish, French, Italian, and English which correspond to Latin -TIO, -TIONIS, to distinguish (i) the variants which are available for the formation of new names, and (ii) those with a historically motivated confi guration. Taking into account the etymological dimension of the the suffi xes and/or the names in which they occur, the analysis focuses on the contribution of different theoretical approaches on the function of the current forms of -TIO, -TION(IS) in these languages. The confi gurations presented by the Latin suffi x -TIO, -TION(IS) in English and Romance languages allow a new typological split: on the one hand, (I) Portuguese, Spanish, and Italian; on the other, (II) French and English. This typological difference may weaken the assumption that all Romance languages are governed by the same patterns of suffi xal delimitation, and may also prove that English derivational guidelines of affi xal segmentation do not apply to other languages of international circulation such as Spanish or Portuguese |
| Portuguese abstract | Neste estudo, analisa-se a estrutura morfológica das bases verbais e dos sufi xos nominalizadores com origem em -TIO, -TIONIS do português, espanhol, francês, italiano e inglês, distinguindo as variantes disponíveis para a formação de novos nomes e as que têm uma confi guração historicamente motivada. A análise tem em conta as dimensões históricoetimológicas dos sufi xos e dos nomes em que ocorrem e discute o contributo de diferentes abordagens teóricas para o funcionamento dos representantes atuais de -TIO, -TIONIS nessas línguas. As confi gurações que o sufi xo latino -TIO, -TIONIS apresenta na língua inglesa e nas línguas românicas permitem-nos estabelecer uma delimitação tipológica singular entre (i) português, espanhol e italiano, por um lado, e (ii) francês e inglês, por outro. Essa diferença tipológica poderá contornar a assunção de que as línguas românicas se regem todas por um mesmo padrão no que toca à confi guração dos seus sufi xos e comprovar que os padrões do inglês não se aplicam necessariamente a outras línguas de circulação internacional como o espanhol ou o português |
