English abstract | The present essay aims to investigate the link established between culture and nature in two novels by Joseph Conrad: Heart of Darkness (1902) and Nostromo (1904). Our interest resides in the possibility of understanding this link starting from the idea of the uncanny (das unheimliche) that Sigmund Freud developed in 1919. The uncanny consists in the unexpected return of the suppressed, a return that Conrad managed to masterfully understand in these novels, anticipating Freud. |
