| English abstract | This article investigates, through a diverse set of sources, the process of formation and development of a community of freedmen and their descendants (Serra dos Pretos), from the late nineteenth century until the middle of the following century. The trajectories we examined illuminate the understanding of some of the many aspects of what was "beyond" of slavery in the southeast, as regards the experiences of former slaves. The value given to family and community relationships is one of them. Approach still one of the central problems faced by freedmen to be inserted in the new order in the post-abolition that is overcoming the stigma of slavery, the burden of the past in captivity |
| Portuguese abstract | Este artigo investiga, por meio de um conjunto diversi¿cado de fontes, o processo de formação e desenvolvimento de uma comunidade de libertos e seus descendentes (Serra dos Pretos) do ¿nal do século XIX até meados da centúria seguinte. As trajetórias que examinadas iluminam o entendimento de alguns dos muitos aspectos do que esteve para “além” da escravidão no Sudeste brasileiro, no que se refere às experiências dos ex-escravos. O valor conferido à família e às relações comunitárias é um deles. Aborda-se, ainda, um dos problemas centrais enfrentados pelos libertos para se inserirem na nova ordem no pós-abolição que é a superação do estigma da escravidão, o fardo do passado em cativeiro |
