| English abstract | In this essay we contend that studying sex as a discourse as well as a practicemay be a way to speak to and assert a universal: the role of sex in humanhistory and human societies. A mighty and contestable view we admit in a timeof the fetish of Difference, often paraded under the politically suspect bannerof culture. However, as the Caribbean is a space that demonstrates theludicrousness of denying the transcultural knowledge that allows one to speakof and resolve the incommensurability of African, Asian, American, andEuropean modes of being, so, too, it allows us to recognize that studying sexopens our purview to seeing the human beyond the exclusivities of racial andethnic speak |
| Portuguese abstract | Neste ensaio sustentamos que estudar o sexo como um discurso e como umaprática pode ser uma forma de falar e de asseverar um universal: o papel dosexo na historia humana e das sociedades humanas. Admitimos que se trata deum projeto ambicioso e contestável, especialmente nos tempos atuais do feti-che da Diferença, freqüentemente apresentada sob a politicamente suspeitaetiqueta da cultura. No entanto, assim como o Caribe é um espaço que mostracomo é ridícula a negação do conhecimento transcultural que permite falar eresolver a incomensurabilidade de modos de ser africanos, asiáticos, america-nos e europeus, também nos permite postular que estudar o sexo abre a possi-bilidade de compreender o humano além das exclusividades dos discursos ra-ciais e étnicos |
