| English abstract | The aim of this paper is to describe a handicraft made of pieces of fabricproduced by the quilombola community of Giral Grande as a element of bothsubsistence and identity. Giral Grande belongs to a group of quilombolacommunities in the town of Maragojipe, located in the Recôncavo Baiano,which struggle for recognition and for possession of the land where they live.The methodology used was Ethnographic Qualitative Research with non-participant direct observation and non-structured interviews. It was concludedthat the handicraft of fabric pieces, besides being an economic activity for thegroup subsistence, possesses features which reinforce the quilombola identityof Giral Grande |
| Portuguese abstract | O presente artigo objetiva registrar o artesanato de retalhos de tecido, produzi-do pela comunidade quilombola de Giral Grande, como um elemento tanto desubsistência quanto de identidade. Giral Grande pertence a um grupo de comu-nidades quilombolas do município de Maragojipe, localizada no RecôncavoBaiano, e luta pelo reconhecimento e pela posse das terras onde se encontra. Ametodologia usada foi a Pesquisa Etnográfica Qualitativa, através de observa ção direta não participante e de entrevistas não estruturadas. Concluiu-se que oartesanato de retalhos, além de ser uma atividade econômica importante para asubsistência do grupo, possui fatores e características que comprovam a iden-tidade quilombola de Giral Grande |
