| English abstract | This paper considers links between the West’s imaginative geography of theOrient and Gilberto Freyre’s imaginative genealogy of Brazilian society bylooking at two key dimensions of Casa-Grande e Senzala (1933): the syncretic,Afro-European character of the Portuguese following five hundred years ofMoorish rule, and the impact of the “East” via the Malês. On the one hand, amythical, feminized Orient connects Brazil to the “oriental sources” of Westerncivilization. On the other hand, the Malê Revolt represents a form of a living,oppositional Islam that upsets Freyre’s premise of master/ slave equilibrium.The text analyzes Freyre’s efforts to negotiate this opposition by incorporatingthe Malês as part of a recurrent Oriental substrain that informs Brazilianculture, with particular attention to his attempt to seize Malê literacy as partof a renewal of the erudite Moors’ will to power |
| Portuguese abstract | Este artigo considera as ligações entre a geografia imaginária ocidental sobreo Oriente e a genealogia imaginária de Gilberto Freyre sobre a sociedade bra-sileira através de duas dimensões-chave de Casa-grande e senzala: o caráterafro-europeu dos portugueses – resultado de quinhentos anos de dominaçãomoura – e o impacto do “Oriente” através dos malês. Por um lado, um Orientemítico e feminizado conecta o Brasil às “fontes orientais” da civilização oci-dental. Por outro lado, a Revolta dos malês representa uma forma viva e opo-sicionista do islã, que ameaça o princípio freyriano do equilíbrio entre senhore escravo. O texto analisa as tentativas de Freyre para negociar esta oposição,inserindo os malês como parte de um recorrente substrato oriental que influen-cia a cultura brasileira, com especial atenção para sua tentativa de incorporar acultura escrita malê como renovação do desejo de poder dos mouros eruditos |
