| Spanish abstract | Tomando como base la lectura del cuento “Juan Sin Miedo” realizada por tres sujetos adolescentes, pretendo responder a la pregunta sobre los principales temores que enfrenta la población costarricense adolescente en la actualidad. Las respuestas giran en torno a tres núcleos significativos: el miedo a la exclusión económica y social, materializada en el trato discriminatorio hacia quienes no se adecuan a los criterios impuestos por la sociedad de consumo; el miedo a la escuela, en tanto excluye a quienes no se ajustan a la norma esperada de desempeño académico; y el miedo al otro, en particular a la calle y la escuela como espacios de violencia. Concluyo señalando que, detrás de dichos temores, es posible leer un anhelo de pertenencia; de aprecio sincero y gratuito, en que no medie el rendimiento académico de la persona; así como un anhelo de seguridad en el entorno cercano |
| English abstract | Based on a reading of the short story Juan Sin Miedo («fearless John») by three adolescents, I intend to provide an answer to the question of the main fears that the Costa Rican adolescent population faces at present. The answers given by these adolescents focus on three significant central elements: fear of economic and social exclusion, expressed through discriminatory treatment towards those who do not subject themselves to the criteria imposed by the consumer society; fear of school in that it excludes those who do not meet the expected academic performance standard; and fear of others, particularly out in the street and in school as realms of violence. I conclude by pointing out that it is possible to visualise, behind such fears, a desire to belong; a longing for both, a sincere and free appreciation where the individual‟s academic performance is not what counts, and for safety within the immediate surroundings |
