| Spanish abstract | Introducción: Las quemaduras en niños son un serio problema. El riesgo de morir es mayor al del adulto. Cuando son intencionales aumenta la posibilidad de volver a ser víctima de maltrato e incluso de muerte. La mayoría de las quemaduras intencionales son por escaldadura; siguen las producidas por contacto con objetos incandescentes: planchas, cucharas, tenedores, cigarrillos. Cada tipo de quemadura tiene características clínicas definidas que es necesario analizar. En conjunto con el entorno social del paciente y su familia se podrá sospechar la intencionalidad de la lesión. Objetivo: Definir las características clínicas de las quemaduras en niños y determinar la presencia de indicadores clínico-sociales de maltrato físico que ayuden a diferenciar si son accidentales o intencionales. Métodos: En un período de siete meses se evaluaron 149 niños con quemaduras. Se analizaron las características clínicas de la lesión y se aplicó un cuestionario que permitió establecer la posibilidad de maltrato infantil. Resultados: Nueve pacientes (6%) cumplieron con criterios clínico sociales para la sospecha de maltrato; además tuvieron características clínicas de quemaduras intencionales |
| English abstract | Introduction: Burns constitute a serious problem in children, who are at greater risk of dying than adults. This risk is increased when they are caused intentionally. Most of intentional burns are by scalds; followed by those produced by contact with hot objects: hot plates, spoons, forks, knives, or cigarettes. Each one of them has definite clinical characteristics which should be analyzed together with the social surroundings of the patient and his/her family. This will determine if they were caused intentionally. Objective: To define the clinical characteristics and to determine the presence of indicators for physical mistreat in order to ascertain whether burns in children are accidental or intentional. Methods: In a period of seven months 149 children with burns were evaluated. A questionnaire was applied which allowed to suspect the presence of infantile mistreat, and to evaluate the characteristics of the burns in order to differentiate between intentional or accidental burns. Results: Nine patients (6%) fulfilled social clinical criteria for the suspicion of mistreatment. In addition they had the clinical characteristics of intentional burns |
