| English abstract | The origins and founding of Sagua la Grande are connected to the Río Sagua, next to which the city was settled in 1812. The sugar industry, its primary source of income and development, utilized the river to transport its merchandise. The city possesses colonial and republican architecture of a variety of styles, associated with the values of its cultural heritage. There are studies and plans for the restoration of its historic downtown, which has enormous strength and potential, but there is no budget to carry them out. This article assesses some mechanisms for the comprehensive management of its heritage that would allow for the implementation of programs that confront the extraordinary challenge of this necessary restoration of a memory that belongs to the entire Cuban nation. |
| Spanish abstract | El origen y fundación de Sagua La Grande están vinculados al río Sagua, junto al que se asentó la ciudad en 1812. La agroindustria azucarera, su principal fuente económica y de desarrollo, utilizaba el río para el trasiego de mercancías. Posee una arquitectura colonial y republicana que abarca diferentes estilos, asociados a destacados valores del patrimonio intangible. Su centro histórico, con enormes potencialidades y fortalezas, y con una difícil situación de conservación de su patrimonio, posee estudios y propuestas para su recuperación, pero no cuenta con los recursos económicos para ejecutarla. En el trabajo se valoran algunos mecanismos para la gestión integral del patrimonio que permitan implementar programas para enfrentar el extraordinario reto que conlleva este imprescindible rescate de una memoria que pertenece a toda la nación cubana. |
