| English abstract | This paper offers a historical and urban analysis regarding the links between the Santa Catarina River and the city of Monterrey, capital of Nuevo Leon, Mexico, from its channeling in 1952 until 2010, underlining the inadequate occupation of the channel as a public space; it also warns about the drawbacks of building directly on the riverbed. The research is based on the consultation of periodicals and journals that provide first-hand information on public and urban policies, thereby meaning it is possible to replicate the methodology applied herein. It goes on to refer to the environmental regeneration of the river, begun in 2010, which provides ecological benefits aimed at mitigating the effects of climate change and preventing the risks that its loss would entail. |
| Spanish abstract | Se ofrece un análisis histórico y urbano sobre los vínculos entre el río Santa Catarina y la ciudad de Monterrey, México, desde su canalización en 1952 y hasta el 2010, subrayando la inadecuada ocupación del cauce como espacio público. Se advierte sobre los inconvenientes de construir directamente sobre el lecho. Se parte de la consulta de fuentes impresas periódicas para aportar información de primera mano sobre políticas públicas y urbanas, lo que posibilita replicar la metodología aquí aplicada. Se refiere la regeneración ambiental del río a partir de 2010, lo que plantea beneficios ecológicos de cara al cambio climático, previniendo sobre los riesgos que supondría su pérdida. |
