| Spanish abstract | Este artículo investiga la relación entre estructura de propiedad y desempeño de 204 empresas chilenas para el período 1998-2007. Contrario a lo reportado por Demsetz (1983), Demsetz y Lehn (1985) y Demsetz y Villalonga (2001), la estructura de propiedad está relacionada con el desempeño de la firma. Los resultados del análisis econométrico muestran una relación negativa entre estructura de propiedad y desempeño, de carácter no lineal y estadísticamente significativa. En resumen, las empresas chilenas poseen una alta concentración de la propiedad que, aparentemente, es motivada por la posibilidad de extraer riqueza por parte del principal accionista |
| English abstract | This article studies the relation between ownership structure and performance of 204 Chilean firms for the period 1998-2007. In contrast to what was reported by Demsetz (1983), Demsetz and Lehn (1985) and Demsetz and Villalonga (2001), ownership structure is related to the performance of the firm. The empirical analysis shows a negative relation between ownership structure and performance, characterized by non linearity and it is statistically significant. In summary, Chilean firms ownership is highly concentrated, which is apparently motivated by the possibility of extracting wealth by the major shareholder |
