| Spanish abstract | Este artículo es adelanto de una investigación más amplia —que dará lugar a un libro— sobre la experiencia de la soledad en Occidente. Explora el fenómeno y la dialéctica de la soledad a través de distintas formas de expresión (el mito, las prácticas ascética y mística, la poesía), tanto en el cristianismo primitivo y la Edad Media, como en la modernidad y el siglo xx. Sugiere el estudio del fenómeno mediante la convergencia de distintas perspectivas para integrar una historia de la soledad. A partir de la distinción entre sus aspectos objetivo (estar solo) y subjetivo (sentirse solo) se aprecia la significación histórica que ha tenido en distintas épocas. De ahí que una indagación histórica de la soledad contribuye no solo a ampliar las dimensiones de la historia cultural, sino también, en un sentido más específico, a la integración de la historia de las emociones |
| English abstract | This article is a preview of a larger study on the experience of solitude in the western culture. It explores the phenomenon and the solitude dialectics through various forms of expression (the myth, the ascetical and mystical practices, and the poetry), both in early Christianity and the middle Ages, and in modernity and the twentieth century. It approaches the study of the phenomenon through the convergence of different perspectives to integrate a history of solitude. From the distinction between objective aspects of the solitude (being alone), and subjective one (feeling alone), the historical meaning that solitude has had through history is exposed. Hence, a historical inquiry of solitude contributes, not only to expand the dimensions of cultural history, but also, in a more specific sense, to the integration of the history of emotions |
