| English abstract | The efficient markets hypothesis is one of the most important subjects in finance theory. However, over the last years, with the intensification of studies and the emergence of evidences regarding the existence of abnormal behaviors in financial assets return (anomalies), this theory began to be discussed within the academic environment. The debate on this polemic subject is still incipient. On one side, we have the efficient hypothesis defenders and on the other side, the supporters of the behavioral finance tendency. The purpose of this article is to show the evolution of studies and tests concerning the efficient markets hypothesis, approaching the emergence of behavioral finance, and to present evidences for and against market efficiency |
| Portuguese abstract | A hipótese de mercados eficientes é um dos assuntos mais importantes dentro da teoria de finanças, porém, nos últimos anos, com a intensificação dos estudos e o surgimento de evidências da existência de comportamentos anormais nos retornos dos ativos financeiros (anomalias), essa teoria passou a ser questionada no meio acadêmico. A discussão do tema é ainda incipiente e objeto de muita polêmica, tendo, de um lado, os defensores da hipótese de eficiência e, de outro, os adeptos da corrente das finanças comportamentais. O objetivo do presente trabalho é mostrar a evolução do estudo e testes da hipótese de eficiência de mercado, abordando o surgimento das finanças comportamentais, e apresentar evidências favoráveis e contrárias à eficiência de mercado |
