| English abstract | This article covers the history of Latindex during its 20 years of existence in order to draw a line of creation and evolution of this index in Latin America and especially in Brazil. Explores the Latindex products in view of the existing contexts in times of their conceptions and thus discusses its characteristics and their purposes. It also analyzes the Latin American scenario for the presence of their science in international scientific communication channels and, considering their low representation in these reflects on the importance of Latindex and made by Network efforts to give visibility to production in the region and assist in increasing the quality of this production. Recognizes and indicates the Latindex capabilities in identifying, meeting and promotion of Brazilian science and points to possible interactions with other services under the responsibility of the Brazilian Institute for Information in Science and Technology. It concludes that, throughout its history, Latindex has had leading role in the function of promoting the visibility, nationally and internationally, technical and scientific magazines in Brazil, but also from Latin America, Spain and Portugal, which before were at scattered and not easily accessible |
| Portuguese abstract | Este artigo percorre a história do Latindex durante seus 20 anos de existência com o intuito de traçar uma linha da criação e evolução desse indexador na América Latina e, em especial, no Brasil. Explora os produtos do Latindex tendo em vista os contextos existentes nas épocas de suas concepções e, assim, discorre sobre suas características e suas finalidades. Analisa ainda o cenário latino-americano quanto à presença da sua ciência nos canais de comunicação científica internacionais e, considerando a sua baixa representatividade nestes canais, reflete sobre a importância do Latindex e dos esforços feitos pela rede a fim de dar visibilidade à produção da região e auxiliar no aumento da qualidade desta produção. Reconhece e assinala as potencialidades do Latindex na identificação, reunião e promoção da ciência brasileira e aponta para possíveis interações com outros serviços sob a responsabilidade do Instituto Brasileiro de Informação em Ciência e Tecnologia. Conclui que, ao longo de sua história, o Latindex tem tido papel de protagonismo na função de promover a visibilidade, nacional e internacionalmente, de revistas técnico-científicas do Brasil, como também da América Latina, Espanha e Portugal, que antes encontravam-se dispersas e pouco acessíveis |
