| English abstract | The article analyses the text “Berlin Childhood around 1900”, by Walter Benjamin, and seeks to show the way the narrative, a mix of autobiography, fi ction and essay, articulates the individual memory to the collective experience and transforms the autobiographical text into the arena for the expression of the memory of a city and of a time. Taking space, and not chronology, as a memory (as well as forgetfulness) articulating category, Benjamin undertakes a refl ection on the possibilities of the act of recollection |
| Portuguese abstract | O artigo analisa o texto “Infância em Berlim por volta de 1900”, de Walter Benjamin, procurando mostrar o modo como essa narrativa, que mescla autobiografia, ficção e ensaio, articula a memória individual à experiência coletiva e transforma o texto autobiográfico no lugar de expressão da memória de uma cidade e de uma época. Tomando o espaço, e não a cronologia, como categoria articuladora da memória (e do esquecimento), Benjamin empreende uma reflexão sobre as possibilidades do trabalho de rememoração |
