| Spanish abstract | Ha existido mucho trabajo en el último tiempo acerca de la noción de ‘fundación’ ( grounding ) ontológica (cf. Correia y Schnieder, 2012b; Fine, 2010, 2012a, 2012b; Correia, 2012; Schnieder, 2011; Schaffer, 2009, 2012; Koslicki, 2012a, 2012b; Audi, 2012; Rosen, 2010; entre otros). La fundación ha sido caracterizada como una relación primitiva, irreflexiva, asimétrica, transitiva y no-monotónica, que implica un patrón de co-variación modal de los hechos fundantes y el hecho fundado, pero que es más fuerte que tal patrón modal de co-variación. Se supone que la relación de fundación es una herramienta conceptual para tratar cuestiones acerca de las conexiones ontológicas no-causales entre diferentes niveles de hechos. Se argumenta aquí, sin embargo, que estas ganancias deben ser sopesadas con cautela. En muchas áreas hay una cuestión sustantiva acerca de si algunos hechos deben ser reducidos o fundados en otros hechos. | English abstract | There has been considerable work lately about the notion of ontological ‘grounding’ (cf. Correia y Schnieder, 2012b; Fine, 2010, 2012a, 2012b; Correia, 2012; Schnieder, 2011; Schaffer, 2009, 2012; Koslicki, 2012a, 2012b; Audi, 2012; Rosen, 2010; among others). Grounding has been characterized as a primitive, irreflexive, asymmetrical, transitive and non-monotonic relation, that entails a modal pattern of co-variation of the ground facts and the grounded fact, but that is stronger that such modal pattern of co-variation. The grounding relation is supposedly a more precise conceptual tool for treating questions about ontological non-causal connections between different levels of facts. It is argued here, though, that these gains should be considered with care. In many areas there is a substantive question about whether some facts should be reduced or grounded on some other facts. We will continue to require a concept of ‘reduction’ alongside that of ‘grounding’ |
