| Spanish abstract | Cada febrero Ixcateopan de Cuauhtémoc recibe cientos de peregrinos y turistas, nacionales y extranjeros, que llegan a este pequeño poblado de la región norte del estado de Guerrero con la finalidad de rendir homenaje al último tlatoani azteca, que dio su nombre a esta cabecera municipal tras el polémico “descubrimiento” de sus supuestos restos en 1949. Más allá del tema de su “autenticidad”, en este artículo exploro el fenómeno turístico e identitario que ha caracterizado a Ixcateopan desde hace más de medio siglo a partir de su identificación como “cuna de la indianidad”. Después de una breve contextualización del asunto, analizo la importancia de los huesos de Cuauhtémoc, exhibidos en la ex capilla de la Asunción como objetos físicos que sustentan un culto de adoración y describo las prácticas en las cuales participan ixcateopenses, turistas, peregrinos, políticos y académicos, convirtiendo a Ixcateopan simultáneamente en símbolo y evento |
| English abstract | Each February, hundreds of pilgrims and tourists, national and foreigners, come to Ixcateopan de Cuauhtemoc, a small town in the northern region of the state of Guerrero, in order to pay homage to the last Aztec emperor, after whom this municipal seat is named due to the polemical “discovery” of his remains in 1949. In this article, I overlook the topic of the “authenticity” of the remains in order to explore issues of tourism and identity that have characterized Ixcateopan for more than fifty years, since it became identified as the “cradle of indigenousness”. After a brief contextualization of the issue, I analyze the importance of the bones displayed as the remains of Cuauhtemoc as physical objects that sustain a cult of adora- tion, and I describe the practices in which inhabitants of Ixcateopan, tourists, pilgrims, politicians and academics participate, converting the site simultaneously into symbol and event |
