| Spanish abstract | Al aumento de la sobrevida por episodios de lesión cerebral, corresponden algunos problemas clínicos que afectan el funcionamiento social de las personas y que generan para su entorno situaciones vitales y económicas difíciles de solucionar. Del mismo modo, este tipo de daño cerebral adquirido es fuente de aprendizaje para el personal de salud (neurólogos, fi sioterapistas, psiquiatras, terapistas ocupacionales, entre otros) que trabaja integrando esfuerzos para facilitar su estudio, detección y tratamiento de las alteraciones conductuales y difi cultades cognitivas. Objetivo: mostrar la importancia del papel del psiquiatra en el tratamiento de estos pacientes. Método: se señalan los aspectos esenciales, como el tipo de información acerca del paciente a su familia, el entrenamiento en habilidades cotidianas o el manejo de conductas problemáticas. Conclusión: el trabajo del psiquiatra es más efi caz, en cuanto más coordinadamente se realice con las asociaciones de afectados y de familiares |
| English abstract | Social functioning is one of the factors affected by the growth of life expectancy after episodes of brain damage, generating environmental and economical situations hard to deal with. On the other hand, this kind of acquired brain damage is a source of knowledge for health personnel (neurologists, physical therapists, psychiatrists, occupational therapists, among others) that work together in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of behavioral disturbances and cognitive diffi culties. Objective: To highlight the importance of the psychiatrist in the treatment of this type of patients. Method: Essential aspects are outlined, such as informing the family, training in skills needed for daily living and the management of problematic behavior. Conclusion: The psychiatrist’s intervention is enhanced by working in alliance with patient and family associations |
