| Spanish abstract | Este artículo se propone analizar el contenido textual del Cuadro de historia civil, natural y geográfica del reino del Perú año de 1799. Previamente, se sitúa la trayectoria de su autor, el vizcaíno José Ignacio de Lecuanda, en el contexto del pensamiento ilustrado que se fomentó en el Virreinato del Perú en la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII. Como hipótesis de trabajo se argumenta que, además de ser una relación geográfica e histórica, el escrito de Lecuanda se inclinó hacia una visión utilitaria de las potencialidades económicas de un espacio que atravesaba por una crisis económica. El texto de Lecuanda fue el punto final de una reflexión ilustrada y científica que se alimentó de los aportes previos del obispo Baltasar Jaime Martínez Compañón, el papel periódico Mercurio Peruano y la expedición científica y política de Alejandro Malaspina |
| English abstract | This article analyzes the textual content of the Cuadro de historia civil, natural y geográfica del reino del Perú año de 1799. Previously, it contextualizes the path of its author, José Ignacio de Lecuanda, in the context of the Enlightenment thought fostered in the Viceroyalty of Peru in the second half of the eighteenth century. As a working hypothesis I argue that, in addition to make a geographical and historical enumeration of facts, the writing of Lecuanda leaned toward a utilitarian view of the economic potential of an area in economic crisis. The text of Lecuanda was the endpoint of an Enlightened and scientific thinking that was fed by the previous contributions of Bishop Baltasar Jaime Martínez Compañón, the Mercurio Peruano newspaper, and the scientific and political expedition of Alejandro Malaspina |
