| Spanish abstract | Este trabajo analiza las causas de la caída del consumo eléctrico residencial en 2008. Se encontró que un 8% de la variación en el consumo es explicada por cambios de ingreso y de precios (incluyendo sustitutos), un 21% es explicada por la baja en el voltaje y un 35% por la campaña de fomento al ahorro impulsada por la autoridad. Si esta última no hubiese adoptado dichas medidas (i.e., baja de voltaje, campañas publicitarias, premios al ahorro), el precio de la electricidad hubiese tenido que aumentar en un 15% más para lograr un nivel similar de reducción en el consumo residencial |
| English abstract | This paper analyses the causes of the unusual drop in electricity consumption in households in Chile during 2008. Changes in income, the price of energy and the price of the substitute explain 8% of the actual drop in consumption. Over 50% of the fall is explained by two of the measures taken by the government: the energy-saving campaign and the planned reduction in the nominal voltage. Other measures included electricity saving rebates and changing the daylight saving time. Had the authority not taken these measures the price of electricity would have had to rise 15% more to induce a similar reduction of household's consumption |
