| Resumen en inglés | Portuguese novels written in the last quarter of the twentieth century present the same characteristics for the representation of time. The ironical discourse is an invitation to reread the present in the light of the past. Through the reinterpretation of the great national myths, the writers question the identity image the country has been building for centuries, the one which perpetuates mentalities and infl uences its evolution. By transferring the individual discourse to a national problem, they propose to revisit and reassess History so as to throw light on a time which is contemporary to them. The circular structures and the multiple and interactive ‘mises en abyme’, reinforce the theme of the eternal return which reveals the authors’ ontological concern. | Resumen en portugués | Os romances portugueses do último quarto do século XX apresentam características comuns quanto à representação do tempo. O discurso irônico dos escritores convida para uma releitura do presente à luz do passado. Através da reinterpretação dos grandes mitos nacionais, questionam a imagem identitária que o país se forjou ao longo dos séculos, que perpetua as mentalidades e condiciona a sua evolução. Reenviando o discurso individual para uma problemática nacional, propõem revisitar e reavaliar a História para esclarecer o tempo que lhes é contemporâneo. As estruturas circulares e as “mises en abyme”, múltiplas e interativas, realçam narrativamente o tema do eterno retorno que revela a preocupação essencialmente ontológica dos autores.
