| Resumen en inglés | The human body, besides being a natural organism, is constituted by ever changing individual and social representations can make. This dynamic is manifested in the way the individuals use, perceive, modify and transform the body. The social representations theory can contribute to the comprehension of the body beyond the individual and psychological dimensions, clarifying the role of shared knowledge on conceptions about the body. The present article intends to diagnose the social representations of the body and the social functions attributed to it by different age groups. Seventy nine members of the university community (UFSC) participated in this research, distributed equivalently between sex and age. A self-administered questionnaire was used for data collection. We found that age differences were more important than sex differences on the social representation of the body and its social functions; and the articulation between these two dimensions suggests that there are counter-normative aspects on the social representation of the body, specifically those connected to the social functions. The participants do not refer to these elements in the lexical content of the social representation, but these elements are indicated by the participant's related behaviors. We suggest the necessity of the development of more efficient methodological strategies on the identification of the social representation, able to consider it in all its complexity |
| Resumen en portugués | O corpo humano, além de ser um organismo natural, constitui-se a partir de representações individuais e sociais, que podem ser modificadas. Essa dinâmica se manifesta na forma como os indivíduos usam, percebem e transformam o corpo. A teoria das representações sociais pode contribuir para a compreensão do corpo para além da dimensão individual e psicológica, esclarecendo o papel do conhecimento compartilhado nas concepções sobre o corpo. Este artigo pretende estudar o papel das funções sociais do corpo nas representações sociais do mesmo para dois grupos geracionais. Participaram 79 integrantes da comunidade universitária (UFSC), distribuídos equivalentemente entre homens e mulheres, jovens e adultos. Para a coleta dos dados, utilizou-se um questionário autoadministrado. Destacou-se neste estudo que as diferenças geracionais são mais marcantes do que as diferenças entre os sexos nas representações sociais sobre o corpo e em suas funções sociais; e a articulação destas duas dimensões sugere que há aspectos contra normativos na representação social sobre o corpo, especificamente os ligados às funções sociais. Estes elementos não são referidos pelos participantes no conteúdo lexical da representação social, mas são indicados pelos seus comportamentos relatados. Aponta-se a necessidade de desenvolver estratégias metodológicas mais eficazes na identificação das representações sociais, que possam considerá-la em toda a sua complexidade |
