The aim of the present study was to assess the prevalence of burden, depression and level of dependency in 74 primary informal caregivers of children with brain injury from a children’s rehabilitation center. Participants responded to the Questionnaire Primary Caregiver Psychosocial Characteristics, the Zarit Burden Interview, the Beck Depression Inventory, and the Barthel Index. The psychosocial characteristics of the caregivers, the amount of time used to care for the patients, and their level of dependence of the children are shown. Results. Three quarters of the caregivers show noticeable burden levels ranging from mild to severe as well as depression ranging from mild to severe. From these findings we conclude that the psychosocial characteristics of caregivers show a typical profile of being adult young women, with only basic schooling and married. Caregivers helped the patient to perform basic activities that, otherwise, they would not be able to achieve on their own. Emphasis is made on the figure of the caregiver as an essential agent in the primary care and attention of children suffering from brain injury |
