| Resumen en español | Hasta hace pocos años la historia de la Iglesia absorbía el estudio de las ideas de los intelectuales católicos. Se trataba, incluso en ese caso, de una historia desatendida, obviada. Las relaciones de autoridad dentro del campo religioso ocluían las evidentes tensiones en su seno. Al tiempo que las monografías sobre el catolicismo se multiplicaron, el estudio de los intelectuales confesionales se autonomizó, enfrentando a su vez distintos desafíos metodológicos y conceptuales. El presente artículo propone discutir algunos de los problemas que presenta la historia de las ideas y los intelectuales católicos argentinos en el siglo XX. Partiendo del caso del humanismo cristiano en las décadas centrales del siglo, analiza tópicos como relevancia, secularización, economía del discurso religioso y la definición misma del intelectual católico. El texto plantea la productividad de analizar la historia del catolicismo como un fenómeno vinculado pero diferenciado de la historia institucional de la iglesia católica. Al mismo tiempo, postula la necesidad de construir instrumentos específicos para interpretar el discurso de los actores religiosos, esto es, una hermenéutica que atienda a sus particulares inflexiones |
| Resumen en inglés | Until recently, the history of the Catholic Church used to include the study of the ideas of its intellectuals. It was, however, an unattended and overlooked history. The authority relationships within the religious field concealed the obvious internal tensions. As soon as monographs about Catholicism had been published, the study of religious intellectuals gained autonomy and, at the same time, faced several methodological and conceptual challenges. This article aims to discuss some of the problems within the history of ideas and the Argentine Catholic intellectuals in the twentieth century. Based on the case of Christian humanism in the mid-twentieth century, the text discusses topics such as relevance, secularization, the economy of religious discourse, and the definition of the Catholic intellectual itself. This piece emphasizes the accrued benefits of analyzing the history of Catholicism (the laity) as a phenomenon which is related to, yet distinct from, the institutional history of the Catholic Church. At the same time, it affirms the need for specific instruments to analyze the religious actors’ discourse, that is, a hermeneutic that interprets its inflections |
