| Resumen en español | L’analisi dell’Impeachment e del Bill of Attainder di Thomas Wentowrth Conte di Strafford ha attirato da tempo l’attenzione degli studiosi della prima modernità inglese. Il dibattito accademico sulla sorte di Wentworth ha compiutamente analizzato la retorica impiegata dal Conte al pari della cornice legale richiamata dalla prosecution. In questo articolo si analizzerà il dibattito a stampa sull’Impeachment e Attainder del conte avvenuto tra il 1640 e il 1641. In particolare l’articolo affronterà l’uso del passato che emergerà dalla pubblicazione dei discorsi parlamentari sul caso Strafford. Il processo al conte infatti non segna solo una nuova lettura della legislazione proditoria ma rivela la costruzione di un’identità fictional in grado di ridefinire i caratteri di uno dei principali ministri di Carlo I Stuart. Il processo al conte, inoltre, spinse la pubblicazione di vari pamphlet in cui ricomparivano una schiera di favoriti o ministri del re nella forma di fantasmi del passato. Ombre e spiriti del passato dunque circonderanno la vicenda del Conte di Strafford influenzandone la rappresentazione |
| Resumen en inglés | A sheer number of pamphlets published between 1640 and 1641 hint at the controversy over the Impeachment and the Bill of Attainder of Thomas Wentworth, Earl of Strafford. The academic discussion over the fate of Wentworth has embraced standardized assessment on the rhetoric employed by the Earl as well as on the legal framework invoked by the prosecution. The aim of this paper is to unfold a rich body of tracts that can shed new light over the Impeachment and the Attainder of the Earl of Strafford. The article addresses the use of the past that hails from the publication of parliamentary speeches on the Strafford trial. The publication and the reprinting of numerous Strafford-related pamphlets in the 1641 not only dredges up questions about treason legislation but it reveals how the identity of a powerful and leading minister of the Crown was both constructed and reinvented. Further, the trial of the Earl of Strafford prompts the publication of several tracts about favorites or ministers that as ghosts from the past rise up engulfing it. Shadows and ghosts, then, surround the execution of the Earl of Strafford shaping his representation |
