| Resumen en español | Se argumenta que la memoria de Juan de Palafox y Mendoza fomentó un patriotismo urbano en Puebla en la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII a través del cual fue madurando una identidad particular que exaltó la memoria del obispo, así como la importancia de la ciudad en el ámbito de la monarquía católica. Al destacar el papel del clero en esta construcción, y en especial el del obispo Francisco Fabián y Fuero, y al enfocarse en las crónicas en torno a la ciudad, el trabajo pretende mostrar que, a la par que fortalecían la causa de canonización, la jerarquía eclesiástica y la historiografía local construyeron la imagen de un obispo que, más que un personaje venerable, era el artífi ce material y moral de la ciudad |
| Resumen en inglés | This article argues that recollections about Juan de Palafox y Mendoza fomented a form of urban patriotism in Puebla in the second half of the eighteenth century, which led to the maturation of a particular identity that exalted both the memory of that bishop and the importance of the city in the setting of the Catholic Monarchy. By highlighting the role played by the clergy in this process, especially that of Bishop Francisco Fabián y Fuero, and focusing on chronicles dealing with Puebla, this research aims to demonstrate that parallel to strengthening the cause of canonization, both the ecclesiastical hierarchy and local historiography built an image of a bishop who, much more than just a venerable personage, became the very material and moral artifice of that city |
