| Resumen en inglés | This article examines the context of production, the content, and the reception of the book Ainsi parla l’oncle (So spoke the uncle), written by Haitian anthropologist Jean Price-Mars and published in 1928. The article maintains that, besides a nationalist interpretation of Haitian popular culture, the book makes important theoretical innovations that anticipate perspectives that the anthropology of the Global North would only adopt five decades later. The article discusses the contrast between the reception of the book, which circumscribes its interest to Haitian, Caribbean, and Afro-Atlantic studies, and the general relevance of its arguments, beyond these restricted anthropological fields. The article, therefore, argues that Jean Price-Mars should be acknowledged and claimed by the history of anthropology not only for the regional and thematic relevance of his work, but also for its theoretical contributions |
| Resumen en portugués | Este artigo discute o contexto de produção, o conteúdo e a recepção do livro Ainsi parla l’oncle (Assim falou o tio), do antropólogo haitiano Jean Price-Mars, publicado em 1928. O artigo argumenta que, ademais de oferecer uma interpretação nacionalista da cultura popular haitiana, esse livro faz inovações teóricas importantes que antecipam perspectivas que a antropologia do Norte Global só viria a adotar cinco décadas depois. O artigo examina o contraste entre a recepção do livro, que circunscreve seu interesse aos estudos do Haiti, do Caribe e do mundo afro-atlântico, e a relevância geral de seus argumentos, para além desses campos antropológicos restritos. O artigo, portanto, defende que Jean Price-Mars seja reconhecido e reivindicado na história da antropologia por suas contribuições não apenas regionais e temáticas, mas também propriamente teóricas |
