| Resumen en español | La dependencia de sustancias es uno de los problemas de salud pública más graves. No hace mucho se le reconoció como un problema médico, la conciencia de la enfermedad es baja. En Estados Unidos hay evidencia de que 20% de la población de individuos con un trastorno adictivo recibe tratamiento. El problema del tratamiento reside principalmente en la negación del paciente y en que requiere un abordaje médico multidisciplinario. En la dependencia de sustancias el alcohol impacta tanto en la incidencia como en diversas condiciones médicas, aproximadamente 6% de las muertes a nivel mundial en 2012 fueron atribuibles a su consumo. Los ingresos hospitalarios relacionados con el consumo de alcohol han aumentado; en el Reino Unido se atendió al doble de pacientes entre 2001 y 2012. Diferentes estudios muestran que más de 20% de los pacientes que acuden a atención primaria y de urgencias tienen un trastorno por consumo de alcohol; sin embargo, no son identificados y por lo tanto canalizados en forma oportuna a servicios de atención especializados. Con base en lo anterior pensamos que es importante que en los servicios clínicos se tenga conocimiento más amplio de la enfermedad, de su identificación y tratamiento |
| Resumen en inglés | Drug addiction is one of the most important health problems worldwide today. Only recently, addiction was recognized as a medical problem, so that awareness of disease in the general population is low. For example, in US there is evidence that only 20% of the population of addicts is receiving treatment. The problem of addiction treatment is that it requires an approach at all levels of scientific knowledge to understand the dynamics of this process. In the addictive spectrum, alcohol influences both the incidence and the course of many medical conditions and about 6% of all deaths worldwide in 2012, may be attributable to the use of it. The number of hospital admissions related to alcohol consumption has increased, for example in the UK, the number of patients admitted double between 2001 and 2012. Different studies show that over 20% of patients attending primary care points and emergency units have alcohol use disorder and/or dependence, however are not identified and therefore channeled to specialized attention. Therefore, it is important in primary care areas to have a greater knowledge on this problem identification and treatment |
