| Resumen en inglés | This article focuses on the area located between the vast plains of Argentinean Pampa and the exuberance of Sierra Gaucha, both strongly conditioned by orography. However, what characterizes this territory is the presence of Uruguay River flowing through it. Both sides of the river are given their names according to their location: the Eastern Republic of Uruguay and the Province of Entre Rios. The 500 km area preceding the river mouth has shaped the political division between Uruguay and Argentina defining their borders for 200 years. This research aims at regaining the original vision of this territory as a unitary space structured by the river. It deals with its transformations, landscape, structuring as well as the underlying project at every stage by means of an approach integrated by different scales. Although each of them lead to a unified image, it is only at the end of this article that the initial question can be answered: are we talking about the Lower Uruguay River as a territory or about two irretrievably unlinked territories? |
| Resumen en español | La investigación que se presenta en este artículo se centra en un territorio localizado entre la enorme planicie de la pampa argentina y la exuberancia de la sierra gaúcha, ambos fuertemente condicionados por la orografía. Sin embargo, lo que caracteriza a este territorio es la presencia del río Uruguay que lo atraviesa, al punto de que ambas márgenes, deben su nombre a su ubicación con respecto al mismo: la República Oriental del Uruguay y la Provincia de Entre Ríos. Los 500 km anteriores a su desembocadura conforman, desde hace 200 años, el límite político entre Uruguay y Argentina, definiendo su frontera. El objetivo planteado es retomar la visión del origen de este territorio como un espacio unitario, vertebrado por el río, dando cuenta de sus transformaciones, indagando sobre su paisaje, su estructuración y el proyecto subyacente en cada etapa, en un abordaje en el que participan varias escalas de aproximación. Si bien cada una permite ir construyendo una imagen unitaria, solamente al final del trabajo se podrá responder a la pregunta inicial: ¿podemos hablar del bajo río Uruguay como un territorio, o estamos frente a dos territorios irreversiblemente disociados? |
