Resumen en inglés This work provides some generalizations on the importance of the coastal zone, treating the problematic, the main challenges and perspectives of the shrimp farming. A general panoram is presented on the aquaculture in the international context, treating the shrimp farming and examining the causes, effects, and mitigating alternatives related with the environmental impact during the siting, operation and abandonment of farm facilities. Additionally, are included some comments on the implications of the shrimp farming as sustainable activity. It is presented a summary on the global production and shrimp cultured species. In the last section is disccused the sustainable shrimp aquaculture as part of the integral coastal zone management and are listed a series of regulations applied in Asian countries. Finally, a set of recommendations are included to obtain an environmentally friendly aquaculture
