Resumen en inglés Cadmium biosorption by the edible mushroom, Lentinus edodes, was evaluated from two points of view: acid-base properties of the adsorbent and kinetics of the process. The number of acidic groups and the apparent ionization constant were potentiometrically determined. The ionization constant values completely agree with values typically associated with other carboxylated polysaccharides’ ionization, verifying their implication in the adsorption. Effects of pH, adsorbent dose and ionic strength were also studied, observing no impacts on the time required for reaching the equilibrium. Furthermore, a strong pH effect as well as a negative ionic strength input is observed in the metal removal. On the other hand, no proportionality between increasing adsorbent dose and metal adsorption was observed. The maximum metal elimination was reached experimentally at pH 4 with no ionic strength
