Resumen en inglés | This paper analyzed the failure sequence for a light truck transmission shaft. The study is based in methodology of Failure Analysis. The conclusions of factory first analysis was in the way of a fragile fracture for torsion overload, but the operation conditions did´nt correspondas with that possibility. After the stress analysis was refused, the first conclussion and with date from fracture toughness was calculate the critical crack dimension for an internal crak. The observation of the failure area, in the Scanning Electron MIcroscopu, proves the presence of a critical crack (2.8 mm), it isn´t the crack area that induces the shaft fractue, but it was very similar. The microstructure observation proves the low material quality, it has a lot of microstructural defects like inclusions, porosity and banded miestructure. All defects reduce the material quality and the cracks are indced mainly by the combination of porosity with local plastic deformation in the upsetting of the bar |
