| Resumen en español | Este trabajo muestra la vida de José Joaquín Calvo López. Describe su origen y familia en Cuba, donde nace, así como el contexto cultural donde se desarrolló. Sus antecedentes repercuten en Chihuahua, cuando toma la determinación de crear el Instituto Literario con la visión educativa aprendida en su país natal y en consonancia con los ideólogos cubanos José de la Luz Caballero y Félix Varela. También se describe su trayectoria militar en México, primero en su lucha contra los insurgentes y después ya como independentista, así como su paso y desempeño como jefe militar en distintos territorios nacionales, hasta llegar a Chihuahua. Desde luego se hace énfasis en la decisión de crear el Instituto Literario de Chihuahua en 1835 y la trascendencia que tuvo, ya que al paso del tiempo se convierte en lo que ahora es la Universidad Autónoma de Chihuahua (UACH). Complementariamente se describe la vida e importancia de Antonio Cipriano Yrigoyen de la O, porque fue el autor intelectual académico de la creación del Instituto Literario, mientras que José Joaquín Calvo López lo fue desde la perspectiva política. Los dos personajes son clave y su trayectoria poco reconocida al gestar una institución de educación superior tan importante. El trabajo se construye bajo el enfoque de la historia crítica a partir de las evidencias documentales localizadas en archivos históricos de Chihuahua (México), La Habana (Cuba) y Nuevo México (Estados Unidos de Norteamérica). | Resumen en inglés | This work shows the life of José Joaquín Calvo López. It describes his origins and family in Cuba, where he born, and the cultural context where he grew up. His backgrounds had repercussions in Chihuahua, when he took the determination to establish the Literary Institute, based on the educational vision learned in his natal country, together with the Cuban ideologists José de la Luz Caballero and Félix Varela. Also, it is described his military career in Mexico, first in his fight against insurgents, and later already as separatist; as well as his path and performance as military chief in different national territories, until his arrival in Chihuahua. Of course, it is highlighted the decision to establish the Literary Institute of Chihuahua in 1835 and the implications it had, because over time it become what is now the Chihuahua Autonomous University (UACH). In addition, it is described the life and importance of Antonio Cipriano Yrigoyen de la O, because he was the academic intellectual author of the foundation of Literary Institute, whereas José Joaquín Calvo López was from the politic perspective. Both are key characters and their careers are not too recognized despite they founded an important higher education institution. The work is built under the scope of critical history, starting from the documental evidence found in historical archives of Chihuahua (Mexico), La Habana (Cuba), and New Mexico (United States of America).
