| Resumen en inglés | Official historiography has affirmed that a large part of the parish clergy of the New Spain supported the insurgent cause, but more recent studies of a revisionist nature have indicated that this was not the case and that the lower clergy maintained more diverse positions during that process and did not limit themselves to maintaining total loyalty to one of the two opposing sides (insurgents and realists). This research analyzes the positioning taken by the parish priests of the municipality of Valladolid, Michoacán, during the process that began in 1810 and culminated in 1821. This analysis is based on specific cases of parish priests who were involved in this historical process. It can be anticipated that the positions of the parish priests in this process were diverse, from those who agreed with the official position assumed by the Church, to those who supported the insurgency, but without forgetting those who remained on the sidelines of the conflict by fleeing their parishes or those who adopted an ambiguous position by supporting both sides, due to the particular demands of their contexts. |
| Resumen en español | La historiografía oficial ha afirmado que gran parte del clero parroquial de la entonces Nueva España apoyó la causa insurgente, pero estudios más recientes de carácter revisionista han señalado que no fue así y que el bajo clero mantuvo posturas más diversas durante ese proceso y no se limitó a guardar total lealtad a uno de los dos bandos en pugna (insurgentes y realistas). La presente investigación analiza los posicionamientos que asumieron los curas de parroquia de la intendencia de Valladolid de Michoacán durante ese proceso que inició en 1810 y culminó en 1821. Para realizar el citado análisis, se recurre a casos concretos de párrocos que se vieron inmersos en ese proceso histórico. Se puede adelantar que las posturas de los párrocos fueron variadas, desde las que congeniaron con la posición oficial que asumió la Iglesia, hasta las que tomaron los partidarios de la insurgencia, pero sin olvidar a quienes se mantuvieron al margen del conflicto al huir de sus parroquias o a los que adoptaron una posición ambigua al apoyar a ambos bandos, debido a las exigencias particulares de sus contextos. |
