| Resumen en inglés | This article deals with the crisis of the ministers of the New Granada Church during the transition of Independence, faced with the dilemma of obeying the king or the new representatives of the Republic. As is known, since the events unleashed in mid-1810, many clergymen joined the revolution, while others remained loyal to the Crown. Positions that many changed on more than one occasion during the stages that ended with emancipation. Their speeches and actions seem contradictory, but they conform to the logic of the interests at stake, which were none other than their own and those of the institution they represented. This essay reissues this problem from the correspondence of the ecclesiastics and their arguments in defense of their tax jurisdiction and resources. From the facts, it can be concluded that they accepted the two powers alternately, although they finally negotiated and strengthened their institutional role in the new State. |
| Resumen en español | Este artículo trata sobre la crisis de los ministros de la Iglesia neogranadina durante la transición de la Independencia, enfrentados a la disyuntiva de obedecer al rey o a los noveles representantes de la República. Como es conocido, desde los hechos desencadenados a mediados de 1810, muchos clérigos se sumaron a la revolución, mientras que otros permanecieron fieles a la Corona. Posiciones que muchos cambiaron en más de una oportunidad durante las etapas que concluyeron con la emancipación. Sus discursos y actuaciones parecen contradictorias, pero se ajustan a la lógica de los intereses en juego, que no eran otros que los propios y los de la institución que representaban. Este ensayo reedita este problema a partir de correspondencia de los eclesiásticos y de sus alegatos en defensa de sus fueros y recursos fiscales. De los hechos puede concluirse que aceptaron las dos potestades de manera alterna, si bien, finalmente negociaron y fortalecieron su rol institucional en el nuevo Estado. |
