| Resumen en inglés | The conservation of the páramos as water reserves for the future and the extraction of gold as a historical form of subsistence, is the dilemma that is evident in the inhabitants of Vetas and California in the department of Santander (Colombia). The purpose of this article is to analyze the mining interdependence of the inhabitants of the aforementioned municipalities with the Santurbán páramo and the rupture of this interrelation with transnational interests with the purpose of carrying out open-pit industrial mining, which have led to socio-environmental conflicts and ecological deterioration. After these purposes, the concern of residents near the Santurbán páramo about the effects on its biodiversity and, particularly, on the deterioration of the water that supplies the nearby populations is expressed. This problem is experienced especially after the year 2011, when the existing socio-environmental conflict in the department of Santander transcends in the media. The monitoring and analysis carried out to the regional press together with the study of some concepts give the methodological guideline to understand this conflict that is still awaiting a geographical delimitation by the national government and an economic solution in favor of the inhabitants of this region. |
| Resumen en español | La conservación de los páramos como reservas hídricas para el futuro frente a la extracción de oro como forma histórica de subsistencia es la disyuntiva que se evidencia en los habitantes de Vetas y California en el departamento de Santander (Colombia). El propósito de este artículo es analizar la interdependencia minera de los habitantes de los mencionados municipios con el páramo de Santurbán y la ruptura de esta interrelación ante intereses transnacionales que, con propósitos de realizar minería industrial a cielo abierto, han suscitado conflictos socioambientales y deterioros ecológicos. Tras estos propósitos se manifiesta la inquietud de pobladores cercanos al páramo de Santurbán sobre los efectos en su biodiversidad y, particularmente, sobre el deterioro del agua que surte a las poblaciones cercanas. Esta problemática se agrava especialmente a partir del año 2011 cuando el conflicto socioambiental existente en el departamento de Santander trasciende a los medios de comunicación. El seguimiento y el análisis realizado a la prensa regional junto con el estudio de algunos conceptos dan la pauta metodológica para entender este conflicto que aún está a la espera de una delimitación geográfica por parte del Gobierno Nacional y de una solución económica a favor de los habitantes de esta región |
