| Resumen en inglés | In this essay, the author presents a summary of the thought of John Calvin, Abraham Kuyper, and Herman Dooyeweerd about the state and government. He examines not only the legitimacy of the institution, according to the understanding of the divine guidelines propounded by these key figures of Reformed theology, but also how Christians can be interested and involved in political activities, as part of their calling. The article specifies the need for recognizing limitations in the different spheres of human activity, as they manage their God-given sovereignty over their internal responsibilities. The author demonstrates that even though there are differences of opinion among Reformed thinkers in this area, there is a uniform tradition in its main pillars which considers government a necessity for the well-being of people, stemming from God’s common grace, established in light of the reality of sin in the history of humanity |
| Resumen en portugués | Neste artigo o autor apresenta um resumo do pensamento de João Calvino, Abraham Kuyper e Herman Dooyeweerd sobre o estado e o governo. Ele examina não apenas a legitimidade da instituição, de acordo com a compreensão das diretrizes divinas expostas por esses três expoentes da teologia reformada, mas como os cristãos podem estar interessados e envolvidos em atividades políticas, como parte de sua vocação. O artigo delineia a necessidade de reconhecimento das limitações das diferentes esferas de atividade humana, em paralelo à soberania recebida por delegação divina, na administração interna de suas responsabilidades. O autor demonstra que, apesar de algumas diferenças de opinião entre pensadores reformados nessa área, há uma tradição uniforme em seus pilares principais, que situam o governo como uma necessidade para o bem-estar das pessoas, fruto da graça comum de Deus, estabelecido em função da realidade do pecado na história da humanidade |
