| Resumen en español | Este artículo busca entregar un panorama general acerca del debate internacional sobre la democracia y sus amenazas, subrayando los factores que explican el abandono del optimismo democrá- tico reinante hasta hace una década. Entre ellos, están los problemas de eficiencia y representatividad de las democracias ya consolidadas y el surgimiento de un nuevo tipo de ciudadano, más empoderado, exigente e insatisfecho. También se observa la evolución de muchas democracias nuevas en una dirección autoritaria. Por último, existe el desafío creciente que imponen regímenes autoritarios de gran peso, en particular de China y su modelo meritocrático de gobierno |
| Resumen en inglés | The aim of this paper is to review the current international debate about democracy and its threats, highlighting the factors that explain the abandonment of the democratic optimism that prevail a decade ago. Among them are the problems of efficiency and representativeness of the already consolidated democracies and the emergence of a new type of citizen, much more empowered, demanding and dissatisfied. Along with this, the evolution of many new democracies in an authoritarian direction has been observed. Finally, there is the growing challenge of authoritarian regimes of great significance, particularly China and its meritocratic model of government |
