Resumen en inglés | White piedra is a chronic superficial mycosis of the hair, caused by Trichosporon asahii (T. cutaneum or T. beigelii), T. inkin and T. mucoides, characterized by soft, whitish nodules, adhered to hair shaft. Objectives: To review Mexican cases of white piedra reported and to know the prevalence in female outpatients older than two years attending the dermatological service at the General Hospital in Acapulco, Mexico. Patients and method: We reviewed Mexican cases of white piedra reported from 1996 to 2010 and designed an open, descriptive, crosssectional, prospective study in 100 females from October, 2009 to January, 2010. The questionnaire, capture and analysis of data were carried out in EpiData version 3.1 and CIET analysis 2.0. A questionnaire with 18 questions, focusing on risk factors, was applied to those who accepted be enrolled and subsequently the hair was carefully examined. Results: From 1996 to 2010, 12 cases were found in the Mexican literature, 8 (67%) came from Guerrero and from them 7 came from Acapulco (87.5%). In this study, we did not find cases but some risk factors were documented: tropical climate and high rainfall area (100%), hold hair (88%), wet hair (51%) and use of gel, cream, oil, foam or spray to styling (77%). Forty-five patients were diagnosed with another hair condition: pityriasis capitis, telogen alopecia, trichorrexis nodosa, alopecia areata and pediculosis. Conclusions: In a review of 15 years in the Mexican literature, we found 12 cases of white piedra, but in our study of prevalence no cases were found; for that reason, larger studies are needed to obtain the real prevalence of white piedra in Acapulco |
