| Resumen en español | En este artículo se analiza la evolución del "miedo a flotar" (fear of floating) y su efecto sobre el producto en Chile, Colombia y México. Se muestra que la volatilidad del tipo de cambio ha ido aumentando conforme se extiende el periodo de flotación en cada país. En el artículo se analizan las implicaciones de este hecho para el comportamiento del producto. Se encuentra que la reducción del "miedo a flotar" ha tendido a reducir la volatilidad del producto en Chile, pero que lo opuesto ha ocurrido en México; mientras tanto, en Colombia los resultados son ambiguos |
| Resumen en inglés | This paper analyzes the evolution of fear of floating (FOF) and its effect on output in Chile, Colombia and Mexico. It shows that there has been a gradual rise in exchange-rate volatility as the period of floating lengthens in each country. The paper analyzes the implications of this evolution for the behavior of output. It finds that the reduction of FOF has tended to decrease output volatility in Chile. However, the opposite phenomenon has happened in Mexico, while the results for Colombia are ambiguous |
