| Resumen en inglés | The effects of va na dium over po pu la tions of onion (Allium cepa) were in ves ti ga ted in or der to dis co ver the co rre la tion bet ween con cen tra tion and time over root growth, in te rrup tion of Mi - to tic In dex (MI) and in duc tion of chro mo so ma tic abe rra tion (CA). Me ris te ma tic cells were grown in fil te red wa ter at 25ºC and treat ments were ca rried out un der the same ex pe ri men tal con di - tions, using so lu tions of va na dium pen tó xi de at 0.25, 0.50, 0.75 and 1.0 ppm for 0, 12, 24, 48 and 72 h. A con trol was ca rried out whe re me tal so lu tion was subs ti tu ted by dis ti lled wa ter. Af - ter the treat ment the me ris tems were fi xed with al co hol - ace tic acid (3:1) and co lo red accor ding to the te chni que of Feul gen. Re sults showed a po si ti ve co rre la tion bet ween con cen tra tion and time of ex po su re on length of the roots and ne ga ti ve co rre la tion with MI. The analysis va rian ce (A NO VA) de mons tra ted a de le te rious effect of ex po su re time and con cen tra tion used. Each time and me tal con cen tra tion used pro du ced diffe rent types of CA: Sticki ness, anapha ses bridges and c- mi to tic effect. The Dun can test ob ser ved a sig ni fi cant in cre ment of the fre quency of abe - rra tions with the cour se of the time and con cen tra tion.
