Resumen en inglés | This paper aims at discussing the interactions between conceptual and historical-cultural aspects of racist representations about Black people. This exploration have been developed by means of socio-cognitive studies of language (SALOMÃO, 1999; KOCH; CUNHA-LIMA, 2004; MARCUSCHI, 2002; among others) and socio-historical studies of racism (MUNANGA, 1999; 2003; COSTA, 2006; REGINALDO, 2018; among others). In this paper, we present and discuss arguments, linguistic examples and results of recent cognitive-linguistic research by Vereza and Puente (2017) about the conceptualization of evil as darkness and by Mendes (2016) about the representation of Black people as monkeys in language use. The study by Vereza and Puente (2017) uses a methodology based on the quantification of racist (non) metaphoric expressions in biblic texts. The study by Mendes (2016) analyzes racist comments in Facebook social network and texts from 19th and 20th century in the Portuguese Corpus (Corpus do Português). Results from those studies indicate that the negative representation of darkness and black colour has a strong embodied and experiential basis, while the representation of Black people as monkeys has a more historical-cultural basis. Considering those research, we conclude that conceptual and historical-cultural aspects intertwine in different ways in racist representation of Black people |
