| Resumen en español | Este artículo da a conocer por primera vez un grabado inédito sobre el tránsito de Venus por el Sol en 1769. La imagen parece haber sido de uso particular de Felipe Zúñiga Ontiveros y representa una excelente oportunidad para apreciar las actividades astronómicas del siglo XVIII en Nueva España. Incluye un breve análisis de los instrumentos científicos mostrados en la escena y un contexto interdisciplinario que permite entender la importancia del grabado, así como de los instrumentos astronómicos plasmados. De esta forma, el artículo representa una aportación tanto a la historia de la ciencia como a la del arte y del libro, ya que se publica por primera vez desde su manufactura |
| Resumen en inglés | This article delves on an unpublished engraving that depicts the transit of Venus around the Sun in 1769. The image seems to have been for Felipe Zúñiga Ontiveros private use, and it represents an excellent opportunity to appreciate astronomical practices in New Spain during the 18th century. Likewise, the article makes a brief analysis of the scientific instruments shown in the picture, and it also provides an interdisciplinary context that allows the understanding of this engravings importance, as well as that of the astronomical instruments captured. As this article represents the first publication of this engraving since the time of its manufacture, the results of this research can be deemed as contributions to the fields of Art History, Book History, and the History of Science |
