| Resumen en español | Este trabajo está dedicado a rastrear las raíces de la denominación "latina" de nuestra América, a través del uso que dio la Iglesia Católica al término. Se examina desde la fundación del Colegio Pío Latino Americano de Roma, impulsado por el sacerdote chileno José Ignacio Eyzaguirre Portales, en la sexta década del siglo XIX, con el auspicio del papa Pío IX. En primer lugar, se hace una breve relación de la evolución del nombre de "América Latina" para pasar a establecer la situación de la Iglesia y su relación con el Estado. Luego, se estudia el origen específico del uso del nombre, la personalidad de Eyzaguirre Portales, los antecedentes y la fundación del colegio. Se concluye con breves referencias a la trayectoria de esa institución educativa, a su influencia, y a la definición de la "Iglesia Católica Latinoamericana", con sus manifestaciones de más de un siglo, hasta los últimos años |
| Resumen en inglés | The paper traces the origins of the descriptor "Latin" for our America through the use of the term by the Catholic Church, starting out with the creation of the Colegio Pío Latino Americano of Rome, promoted by Chilean priest José Ignacio Eyzaguirre Portales under the auspices of Pope Pius IX, in the sixth decade of the 19th century. First of all, the article includes a brief review of the evolution of the term "Latin America" and then goes on to discuss the situation of the Church and its relationship with the State. It then analyzes the specific use of the term, the personality of Eyzaguirre Portales, and the background and creation of the pontifical college. Finally, the paper discusses the trajectory of this educational institution, its influence, and the definition of "Latin American Catholic Church", together with its expressions over more than a century |
