| Resumen en inglés | There is a gap in scientific production on alcoholism in indigenous populations, despite the fact that it is one of the gravest health problems that the Indians face today in Brazil. Beginning with the biomedical definition of alcoholism, in which the abuse of alcohol is understood to be an organic illness and without the possibility of a cure, the article argues as to the necessity of recognizing that there are different styles of drinking, not always associated with behaviour negative to health. The use of fermented beverages in the context of rituals has a a constructive role in indigenous societies, reinforcing social links. However, at the moment, the act of drinking has become distant from the traditional forms, bringing collective and individual harm. The abuse of alcohol reinforces the stigma of being an Indian in Brazil. In this way, for the implementation of effective health programmes, it will be necessary to deconstruct biases, considering the aspects of the social/political/historical context which determine alcoholic behaviour. Beyond this, it is fundamental to understand the significance given to the use of alcoholic beverages in each indigenous group and what the concerns are and the solutions, as yet, half-seen by the group iself |
| Resumen en portugués | Existe uma lacuna na produção científica sobre alcoolismo em populações indígenas, apesar de ser um dos mais graves problemas de saúde que os índios enfrentam hoje no Brasil. Partindo da definição biomédica de alcoolismo, em que o abuso do álcool é entendido como uma doença orgânica e sem possibilidade de cura, argumento sobre a necessidade de se reconhecer que existem diferentes estilos de beber, nem sempre associados a comportamentos negativos para a saúde. O uso de bebidas fermentadas em contextos rituais tem papel construtivo em sociedades indígenas, possibilitando o reforço dos vínculos sociais. Entretanto, atualmente, o ato de beber se distancia das formas tradicionais, trazendo prejuízos individuais e coletivos. O abuso do álcool reforça o estigma de ser índio no Brasil. Assim, para a implementação de programas de saúde eficazes, será necessário desconstruir preconceitos, considerando os aspectos do contexto sociopolítico e histórico que determinam o comportamento alcoólico. Além disso, é fundamental entender o significado atribuído ao uso de bebidas alcoólicas em cada grupo indígena, e quais as preocupações e as soluções vislumbradas pelo próprio grupo |
