| Resumen en inglés | This essay examines, from the reference literature, the theme of the relation between religion and health. It explores succinctly the historic path of seminal studies of religion by Psychology. It analyzes two perspectives: the first sees religious behavior as related with human behavior; the second matches the description of religious behavior with analyses of how religion works to help people and communities to adjust and to understand the world. This text identifies some reduction trends in this area of research. It discusses the current status of the relation between the so-called hard sciences and the sciences of culture that are committed to studying human interactions and the religious phenomenon. | Resumen en portugués | Este ensaio examina, a partir da literatura de referência, o tema da relação entre religião e saúde. Percorre a trajetória dos estudos seminais da religião realizados pelapsicologia. Analisa duas perspectivas: a primeira estuda os comportamentos religiosos específicos em termos do comportamento humano; a segunda combina a descrição do comportamento religioso com a análise de como a religião funciona para ajudar os indivíduos e grupos a adaptar-se e a entender o mundo. Identifica algumas tendências reducionistas nessa área de pesquisas. Discute o estado atual da relação entre as denominadas ciências duras e as ciências da cultura que se dedicam ao estudo das interações humanas e do fenômeno religioso.
