| Resumen en inglés | The present study aims to analyze the construction of the “holiness” of José Vaz, one of the founding members of the Congregation of the Oratory of the Holy Cross of Goa’s Miracles, in 1682, an “order” formed exclusively by Goan Brahmins. Canonized by the Catholic Church in 2014, José Vaz was one of the great responsible for maintaining Catholicism in Ceylon after the expulsion of the Portuguese from the island by the Dutch in 1658. Through the reading of the work of Sebastião do Rego entitled Chronology of the Congregation of the Oratory of Goa, completed in 1746, search to analyze the way was built the holiness of José Vaz as well as to understand the formation and action of a native clergy in spaces beyond the control of the presence of the Portuguese crown in the East, thus contributing to an extension of research concerning Asian Catholicism |
| Resumen en portugués | O presente estudo tem por objetivo analisar a construção da “santidade” de José Vaz, um dos membros fundadores da Congregação do Oratório da Santa Cruz dos Milagres de Goa, em 1682, uma “ordem” formada exclusivamente por brâmanes goeses. Canonizado pela igreja católica em 2014, José Vaz foi um dos grandes responsáveis pela manutenção do catolicismo em Ceilão após a expulsão dos portugueses da ilha pelos holandeses em 1658. Através da leitura da obra de Sebastião do Rego intitulada Chronologia da Congregação do Oratório de Goa, finalizada em 1746, busco analisar o modo foi construída a santidade de José Vaz bem como compreender a formação e ação de um clero nativo em espaços fora do controle da presença da coroa portuguesa no Oriente, contribuindo assim para um alargamento das pesquisas referentes ao catolicismo asiático |
