| Resumen en español | El año de la pandemiaAño impensado, raro, ojalá irrepetible, este 2020 marcó nuestras vidas. Será muy difícil olvidar que, de un día para otro, la vida cambió. Permítanme la licencia de hablar en primera persona, pero jamás pensé que aquel sábado 14 de marzo, cuando decidí pasar un momento por mi oficina en la Universidad Industrial de Santander, iba a ser la última vez que la visitaría en este año. Fui por algunas cosas que necesitaba en casa, simplemente pensando en usarlas el domingo, aprovechando que tenía un rato para caminar y que podía ir hasta la UIS. Pero era obvio (¡vaya ingenuidad!) que el lunes 16 estaría nuevamente allí.Ese 14 de marzo ni siquiera había existido un caso de COVID-19 en Santander, el cual se confirmó el día 17 de ese mes, cuando sólo se contabilizaban 65 casos en todo el país. No habíamos pensado nunca en tener que usar tapabocas, en estar confinados en casa durante meses, en ser profesores a través de una pantalla de computador, en fin, en ver todas estas cosas extrañas que ocurrieron en este año extraño.Lo demás, todos lo sabemos. El mundo transformado y la confianza depositada en la Ciencia. Esperamos que los destellos de genialidad de la especie humana permitieran encontrar una manera de protegernos. Y allí está. Una vacuna que por estos días empieza a aplicarse en diversos lugares del mundo, con la esperanza de frenar esta pandemia brutal, que ha cobrado cerca de dos millones de vidas en este 2020.¿Y por qué caer en la tentación de hablar de lo mismo desde este espacio? ¿No basta, acaso, con el bombardeo de información al que nos hemos visto sometidos durante meses? | Resumen en inglés | A year into the pandemicUnexpected as it was, rare and hopefully unrepeatable, this 2020 marked our lives. It will be very difficult to forget that from one day to the next life changed so much. Allow me to speak in first person as I refer back to that Saturday, March 14th, when I decided to stop by my office at the Universidad Industrial de Santander. Never did I imagine it would be the last time I would visit it this year. I went there to get some things I was planning to use the next day at home, taking advantage of the fact that I had some minutes to walk and that I could go to the campus even though it was obvious (what naivety!) that on Monday the 16th I would be there again.On March 14th there had not even been any cases of COVID-19 in Santander. It was only until the 17th of that month that the first one was confirmed along with 65 other cases throughout the country. We had never thought of having to wear face masks all the time, of being in lockdown at home for months or of teaching through a computer screen while seeing all the strange things that happened in this unusual year.We know the rest of the story. As the world was transformed and the trust of humanity was placed on science, we hoped that the genius of the human species would allow us to find a way to protect ourselves; and now there it is! A vaccine that in recent days is beginning to be distributed in various parts of the world in hopes of stopping this brutal pandemic, which has claimed nearly two million lives in 2020.But, why should we fall into the temptation of talking about the same topic in this space? Is it not enough with the media bombardment that we have been subjected to for months?
